frequently asked questions

How long will it take to turn around my project?

Turnaround time depends on several factors—manuscript length, subject matter complexity, scheduling—but in general, you can expect the following turnaround times:

  • Developmental projects (Editorial Consultation, Developmental Edit, etc.): 1–2 weeks

  • Substantive and content editing (Editorial Polish, Punch Up, etc.): 3–5 weeks

  • Copyediting and proofreading: 3–5 weeks

Does Command+Z use an editing agreement/contract?

Yep. We’ve got a simple editorial agreement that we require you to sign before we can begin working on your project. It spells out the scope of your chosen service, the timeframe during which we’ll complete the project, and how much it costs.

What is the payment schedule?

We typically ask for 50% upon commencement and the final 50% upon completion and return of the manuscript. However, for services that do not include a round of revisions—the Editorial Consultation and the Developmental Edit—we ask for the full fee upon commencement. We are happy to work with you to put together a schedule that works with your budget. If you need to make some tweaks, just ask!

So, you’ll return my manuscript back to me error-free, right?

Our goal is to make your manuscript as close to error-free as possible. However, it’s impossible for us to guarantee a completely error-free manuscript. Publishers understand that it’s unrealistic for a single editor to catch 100% of errors in a manuscript, and that’s why most traditionally published books go through multiple rounds of copyediting and proofreading. If you are planning to self-publish, copyediting AND proofreading are a must if you want your book to be the polished, professional work it deserves to be.

Where are you based?

Command+Z calls the Denver, Colorado, area home, but our team and our clientele live all over the world. We work primarily through email, phone, and Skype, so whether you hail from Perth, Prague, Cape Town, or Cape Cod, we want to hear from you.

Do you do sample edits?

We do not. We believe our full attention and sharpest brainpower belongs to our clients first and foremost. Of course, we also totally understand how important it is to make sure your editor is the right fit. Get in touch with us, and we can offer up a few options.
